This project is being built in conjuntion with several people and companies.**Without the support I have received the car would not exist...so, to start with, I want to say thank you to Travis (Boogeyman Productions), Russ (KC Auto Paint), PPG, Dave (Stay Tuned Motorsports), and Kirk (PTR Injection).**Im sure there will be many more names to add to the list as I get closer to finishing the car.

Some of you may have seen the car at the track in its previous stage as an NA drag car with a best time of 11.31 @ 120 mph.**The car has been to national competitions in Las Vegas, NV, Woodburn, OR, and Pomona, CA.**Here are some pictures of the car from years past.

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f326/wsuk20/SpeedShow.jpg

After much deliberation, and some help from a broken valve, I decided to take this car to the next level.**For this season the car is being prepped to run in the NHRA Sport Compact Hot Rod class.**The K20 powerplant will remain for this season with a GT4202R to help it breath.**We are currently working on a full color change for the car and have rearranged some of the interior components.**EMS engine management will be used to control the fuel needed to see some significant power.

I will continue to update this thread as I get things done.

The turbo is going to stick out of the hood about 3 inches.

the little weld is the stand that holds the chute, when it's actually deployed the part that it's attached to is the bottom part that has the U shape with a hole on either side.

What gauge tubing is that? and how are you guys gonna brace it?

BlackMagic
02-22-2007, 09:49 PM
The tubing is 1.75" .065 wall mild steel. The turbo will be braced with a support from the flange to the engine block and transmission.

If I like the way this manifold sits in the car, I will be starting a final stainless one in a couple of weeks.

BOOGEYMAN
02-22-2007, 11:54 PM
I have a pretty sweet idea for a brace but I need the turbo mounted on the header and in the car to finalize it and see if it will work. I will know by tomarrow night.

Got the header all welded up last night and the collector all done as well and it looks killer in the car with the turbo hanging off of it!!! Today I am going to make the brace for the turbo, try to get the wastegate plumbing all done and start fabbing up the down pipe.

I will post some pictures later.

I got the down pipe fabbed, the turbo brace all done and complete(came out sweet!!), didnt have the wastegate so that will have to wait a few days. Reid got the custom front Track bar all made and tacked up and I just put the finishing welds on it. Fuel cell mounted and pump mounted, Everything is going great!!!! It is 2:30 am and I just got home from a night on the town with Reid after a long day and I promise I will post pic's in the morning(well maybe afternoon when I get up :)) haha

On the turbo braces, it would significantly increase the strength if you were to put an "X" between the two making them one unit. Or at the least, tie them together with a bar.

Also, out of curiosity, why do you want to do it up in stainless? The mild steel is better for that situation, IMHO. If anything, do it out of chromolly to shed a bit of weight.

I think that Travis had already planned to add a cross support to the brace, it just wasnt in that picture.

The stainless is more for *bling* factor than anything else, a nice ceramic coated ss header sure would look good back there. For now, the mild steel will be wrapped and function just fine.

Weight is not an issue as I need to add ~450 lbs to the car to compete in the NHRA sport compact events.

gregc
02-26-2007, 01:24 PM
If you are going to ceramic coat it anyway, why not keep the mild steel?

I've just seen lots of stainless stuff crack.

KryptoSol
02-26-2007, 02:40 PM
For stainless stuff it seems that most are using schedule 10 or 40, backpurging, beveling, and double pass.

But if you got plans to ceramic coat it, i'd just leave it in mild, or wrap it up.

Everything looks cool though...

Greg,

i planned on building an x brace inside of the two braces I already built but they are so damn strong as they are with the 1/4 inch strap I may just leave them....not sure yet.

02-26-2007, 09:01 PM
Looking good! I agree with Greg on the issue of stainless headers. The damn stainless expands at twice the rate of mild steel and is more prone to cracking. Your header is long enough with enough bends to probably be ok though. Mild steel headers uncoated do have a major long term corrosion problem inside the pipes but coating takes care of that since somehow they get the coating to go inside the pipe as well.
Joes turbo headers are stainless and pretty damn short on the front tubes so we will see if they bust or not. Also, stainless is really happy on a drag only car since there is so much less heat cycling than a street car.

Cool. Does it just bolt on both sides? If so, I'd put the brace in. My reasoning is if the tubes weren't there to trianglate the whole structure, then the flange/mount could move forward and backward if the bolts were to work loose.

By adding the brace, you are taking that support for forward/backward movement away from the pipes and putting it into the brace.

Update 3/13/07

Got the wastegate all fabbed on and the wastegate down tube welded into the downpipe, It sure is a LOT of pipeing under the hood of a honda......:) I did the IC pipe from the turbo and just waiting on Reid to bring me the intake plenum he built at school the finish the rest. All is going good and should have paint on it by sat morning if all goes well, then next weekend chassis cert then the next weekend is the auto show so it will be tight but we should make it!!!

I will try to get some updated pics up thursday night. Thanks.

Is that mounting of the turbo going to affect the seals being at such an angle for the oil drain being tilted back.

BOOGEYMAN
03-18-2007, 01:32 PM
At 60+ oil psi it will never know any difference.

Come on Reid get those pic's up!!!

60 is probably the upper limit and should be ok. They will survive on surprisingly low oil pressure and if they have a smoking problem, a restrictor can solve it as long as you put a gauge on the turbo to quantify how much psi it sees after putting in a restrictor. I think most guys shoot for 30 psi at the turbo. Im not sure how it will be affected by the mounting position its at either though.

KryptoSol
03-18-2007, 02:32 PM
BB CHRA and 60+psi of oil pressure. i dunno...
If i remember correctly, don't BB CHRA require less oil pressure than journal bearing?

and at that angle i'd be scared of starving the compressor side BB cartridge, but who knows maybe its not an issue.

BOOGEYMAN

When and where is the Auto Show?

BlackMagic
03-18-2007, 10:03 PM
The turbo angle is a big issue with street cars simply because the oil can collect and coke in the turbo. I have talked with several others using a turbo at this angle (or greater) and they have told me that it just takes some extra maintenece. Keep in mind that the car will see, at most, 20 passes on an oil change so when the oil is changed I will just have to be sure to pay special attention to the oil return.

Good point about being a BB cartridge and possible different oil press requirements. I dont know the answer to that one. As far as feed oil goes, the bearings are direct fed thru oil galleys so the angle shouldnt hurt that part. Just drainback concerns which being drag only, shouldn't matter on a short burst like Travis said.
