My kid is building a b18a for his crx. He wants a turbo but we need to figure out if he needs new pistons. I was thinking of using the stock ones with a thicker head gasket to lower compression. Will the stock nes hold out or should we get new ones while the motor is apart?

It depends on you HP goals. The LS motor comes relatively low comp already, and its not uncommon for guys to make 280-300whp on those bone stock. With a good tune of corse.

But it you got the cash to do it (pistons) while the motor is apart then even better.

You can get away without them, but to do the build properly I would highly recommend a piston upgrade. Also, getting the pistons ceramic coated is some cheap insurance against melting pistons.

I have seen more headgasket leaks come from using thicker headgaskets which could cost you more time and money that if you would have done pistons in the first place. my .02.

Can you give some more info on your set up? Stock head? How many miles are on this engine? What turbo/wastegate? How much boost?

From my little experience from messing with turbo Honduhs, tuning or getting it tuned right will make or break (literally) your build. Just like with anything i guess.

This should be a testament to what a stock block is capable of. Granted this is all in the tuning.

I love these "most power on stock block" threads mainly because afterwards everyone who reads them thinks they will have a 300-400whp stockblock B-series or 300-350whp d-series build.

i guess i was a little disillusioned at one time too... we all come to reality sooner or later.

I gotta say there are definately gifted tuners and freak motors out there though...

The head is ported and he will be using new cams. (not sure what grind yet) Along with springs and all the little goodies that go along with bigger cams. the crank has been trued and polished. He is picking up a plate for the crank next week. We will also be using one of them cylinder support deal a bobs. (sorry it's 330 in the morning) I think that about it for the block. Not sure about the mileage but I can find out. I believe it was pretty low. (under 100K) He is wanting to run low boost for everyday driving and turn it up at the track. He was thinking for racing around 15lbs. I don't think that is too crazy, but this is my first time building a boosted motor, so I don't have a clue on what parts to get. Since we are starting from the bare block up where should we go next? Pistons? Rods and pistons? We still have plenty of time to save up for parts so cost isn't too much of an issue. Right now we are cleaning up all the rough stuff on the block and should be painting it this weekend. We still have about five hours or so of sanding and smoothing it out. I'll try to ad some pics this weekend. Here is a pic of the car it's going in.

Even in the B18 the connecting rod is pretty weak. If you want this engine to be reliable and powerful, do it right the first time. Sounds like the block is apart already so why not throw in some rods and pistons.

I am a big fan of CP and Wiseco for the pistons. As for rods, I dont have a preference. I have used Crower, Pauter, Eagle...never a problem with any of them sooooo...
