View Full Version : Thinking of getting a Mustang...and turboing that bitch...

Well I've always been a huge fan of the SN95 mustangs. Before I became an import guy I wanted a Mustang more than anything in the world.
I know the 94-95's came with the 5.0 which I already know is one of the best engines Ford has made.
So I was thinking, combine my turbo experience with American muscle and have one hell of a car! I figure since a V8 is so big compared to a 4 banger it can move so much air that spooling a big ass turbo would be no problem.
So here are my questions:
1) Is this a good idea?
2) How much can I expect to pick up a 94 or 95 5.0?
3) Do these engines have forged internals from the factory? I swear I remember reading that somewhere.

If you are going to run any meaningful boost, get a nice block built, spend your money in the bottom end. The stock blocks will handle quite a bit, especially if you are going with a mexican block, but the pistons are crap, and most of the other parts internally.
Also, you will need a tranny that will withstand the power, the stock t-5s are pretty weak. The 8.8 is pretty bulletproof from the factory, I am using a stock 8.8 rear end in my car, and launching at 6k rpm with 530 RWTQ.
Good luck, power is easier with cubes!

My 89 gt with a bone stock engine except for the cam, no head porting or anything made 450 at the tires at a whimpy 12 lbs and pump gas with a single t72. This was a Blow through set up as well, the car is a blast.

How is a single turbo mounted on a V8? Is one header just a normal header and the other one spools the turbo?

both sides are plumbed into one and routed to the turbine housing.
a project car is a project car, are you trying to start another money pit, Mr.? :)

I dunno. I'm looking at a few options right now.
Is a Mexican block like something like a Windsor or Cleveland or does Mexican mean bad/ghetto? Hehe

up till 93 (someone will correct me if I'm wrong) the factory 302's had forged internals and could handle a heck of alot of power. The forged internals changed with the new body style. The Mexican 302's have alot more cylinder wall to them (and probably other changes that made them stronger - memory is fading) so they are the best of the best factory offerings for guys that want to make a lot of power while not building a shortblock from scratch. Read up on turbomustangs.com and take Snyper up on his offer to checkout his GT. Most fun cars you will ever drive.

I'm not sure what exactly you mean by how much does one cost....but, I have a '94 GT convertible....the lot was selling it for $8500 about 1 1/2 years ago but I got it for $6500 (I knew the guy and had bought a Mustang from him before). According to NADA a poor condition one is $4K and an excellent condition one is $6K. I don't know much about the coupes or '95's. Look it up on NADA though.
I like my 5.0 and now I can't believe I actually thought of trading it in for a different Mustang. The 5.0's will be increasing in value (I would say) in the next 5-10 years....at least that's the rumor I'm hearing.
