Just realized i haven't been on this site all summer. Thought i'd share what i'm doing with the cobra, for those interested.
Original plan was to go twin turbo, but decided against it because i would have been running the stock rods and pistons, which are a crap shoot. So changed plans and going with a N/A build. Should put down around 400 to the wheels with my 4.6.
The parts:
Fully ported 01 cobra heads
Ported FR500 intake manifold-Best you can get, but is hard to find and costs 3000, but i paid less than half : ) Its cast out of magnesium and has both long and short runners with butterflys to transition between the two.
Custom comp billet N/A grind cams. 234/224 duration at .050 and .475/.450 lift
Melling oil pump w/ billet gears
ATI Dampener
Fidanza alum flywheel
McCleod twin disc clutch
Among other supporting mods
Still deciding on injectors and MAF. Have a walboro pump installed.
I have the motor out and torn down. Waiting on the heads, which should be shipped by the end of the week. Hoping to be done, assembled, and at the tuners in vancouver on the 25th.
I'll set the rev limit at 7200 and shift around 7000. If i had forged internals i take it closer to 8, but i don't wanna push my luck. I will be back living in cheney prob around second or third weekend of sep.

Nice!

Why would you spend that much on an intake manifold, might as well be an import for that price? Hell you coulda bought a nitrous kit for half of that and pocketed the rest. Its reasons like that, that the modulars will never be as popular as good ole pushrod power. Getting off my soapbox now.
i'd have to agree with ntrcptr90. sounds like a wannabe honda manifold, minus well have gotton an import...j/k ....i'd have to agree on the getting nitrous for half the price ....looks like a nice build nonetheless!!!

Seriously while you have the motor apart, just put some decent internals in, skip the FR500 for now and do the right thing man. You wont regret it.

assuming this is a twin cam cobra engine, why not just go wit a Sullivan intake, it is less then half that amount and they are a nice looking piece. the last twin cam i had Cassell build was not far out off range, i believe for H beams, forged pistons, balance and all was under 4 grand with cams i believe or maybe a hair over.
although this build was for a low comp ATI charger.

Aren't the Cobra Modular motors able to withstand high power? Or does that only apply to the 03/04 models?

It is DOHC, and i did think about the sullivan. But i didn't pay anywhere near the 3000 ford racing wants for the intake, more like 1000, which is cheaper than the sullivan. Especially since i would have to get a an new throttle body, and maybe new hood.

I thought about it, but if go turbo/supercharger it won't be for a long while, and i will have tear back into the motor anyways. I don't mind doing it, since i do it all myself, but i know what you are saying.
The stock shortblock is in great shape, looked it over, and im not worried at all. I'm not going to rev anywhere past 7200rpm, and most of the time it will be 7000. Plus i don't beat on the car that much, just at the drags once a month.
Sure it could blow after the first high rpm pull, but such is life. The fr500 is setting me back 1500. I was then able to sell the ported mach intake i had for 625, so its really only an extra 875 for a badass intake.
Plus i will be able to sell the intake, if need be in the future for a good amount.
With the ati dampener and billet oil pump gears, i'm not too worried about it. The oil pump gears are usually what fail in high rpm situations.

Tell me about it! The modular aftermarket is horrible and expensive! But i didn't spend that much for the intake because there is no way i would buy a 3000 dollar intake over a 3000 supercharger. Paying only about a grand though, i figured it will really help the motor.
The stock intake quits at 6200 rpm due to the runner length. I could have made a shortrunner and lost all low end power, in order to raise my peak rpm, but i drive this car alot and would be a dog in town, so i figured not to mess with it.
I'm impressed with the n/a power this 4.6s can put out. The guy porting my heads has one putting out 475 to the wheels at 7600 rpm. Of course he's got alot of time(and money) into it but damn its impressive. Not to mention drives like stock and retains 20+ mpg with 4.56 gears.
Thought about nitrous, but not a risk i'm willing to take. With the motor the way it is, it should(knock on wood) be plenty fast and streetable for me. Of course it never works out that way.

Well, Your car still isnt streetable jeremy. Time to get that thing back together and get it tuned. then let me drive it :)
Im way too excited about your car and the numbers it is going to put down. Its only going to make my car feel slow....causing me to throw money into it until i feel satisfied.

No i didn't. I thought about throwing a tubular k on, but read some info about safety on the street with tubular k's and decided just to use the stocker.
