View Full Version : Are people insane to pay 70K for a Supra?

What makes these cars so expensive? I am lookign at eBay motors and it blows me away that a 100,000 mile, 13 year old car will go for 30 grand.
Now this one, I guess I can see...
eBay Motors: Toyota : Supra (item 110188155284 end time Nov-09-07 08:41:10 PST) (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1997-Toyota-Supra-Modified-Super-Car_W0QQitemZ110188155284QQihZ001QQcategoryZ6447QQ ssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)
But a salvaged title? Why would I pay $30K+ for that?

Generally I can appreciate the Supra's and find them looking half decent but that has gone over the top.
For some reason people think that modding a car is an investment and you will get your money back and than some for all the work for some reason... They are just hoping a Barrett Jackson type buyer will see it and call up and start up the bidding.

sad thing is they can sell for even more than that... Ive seen em go for well over 100k. Possibly the next hemi cuda value-wise?

I dunno, I would imagine a lot of the popularity of it is from F&F. I remember my cousin going on and on about it from that movie and how it is his dream car and he wants it done up just like that, blah blah blah.
Granted those old muscle cars were in some movies so those could help out their value as well, who knows. Older a car gets, it can gain some sort of value but usually that is with something that isn't driven and most often left in stock form. Other thing collectors look for is something that makes it more rare/unique than other models of the car, like the interior/paint combo for example.
In the end, it is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. If I found the person that was dumb enough to buy my TA for more than $30k+ because it is a "75th anniversery Pontiac" badged car I would have no problem selling it to them, all that is different about mine than any other next to it is that it has a badge with a little hologram to it the size of a quarter.

Lol...that is more then likely what I am getting if I could just get rid of my car.

F&F didn't have THAT huge of an impact on them....they just didn't depreciate their value that much.
Most of the value is the engine. 1000hp stock block is common. The drivetrain is bulletproof. The car looks just drop dead sexy.
Any of you driven one??? oh my...
You can find bone stock ones for 20-25....keep in mind the 6 speeds demand a premium over the autos
also think of how expensive they were brand new.....toyota is a bit nuts in that respect

Nice body kit......I call bullshit on the 10 second 1/4mile with 720cc injectors......and definately not with those tires

It's definitely no crazier than the Honda guys spending $3,000 on wheels and $8,000 on swaps for a $2,000 car :)

I have read on the engine a bit and have heard that it is good to 1000hp and also heard that is very overrated and has only been done in rare cases. The enigne from my understanding is basically one of their de-tuned race motors they used in F1 to meet the basic needs for a car.
I have only ever heard of one maybe two cars that have hit the 1k on the stock block. From glancing over some peoples mod lists after about 600HP or so they start doing bottom end work on it.
It is one of those cars that as it gets older the value can increase if it is in good condition. Not many out on the road and the people that want them are going to snag them and hold on to them. Look at people that collect the old muscle cars. The only way they are willing to ever part with it really is for some insane price. Was a 67' Camaro on Craigslist last week I think that the owner was wanting $60k for it. From the description it looked like it was just a ground up restoration.

yeah according to the calculator thing based on those injectors thats like a 450-500 hp supra :( max.

Actually closer to 700+whp for 750cc injectors. Supraforums.com (http://www.supraforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=380459&highlight=750cc)

i dunno about the JZ engine coming from some race motor...thats new to me.
And nievo is right....supras are an oddity in that the injector size is a rule of thumb for horsepower supported (just the way the math works out)
so lets say he's got 700 hp at the wheels....with that much weight it isn't going to run a 10.1
....I think as far as street trim Supra's go 1000hp is a high 9 second...with drag tires
As far as only a few JZ blocks hitting 1000 stock bottom end...umm....whatever. Most of the race supras are running a 3.4 stroker kit if thats what you're looking at

Didn't they come from the factory with like 285 horse? I know it's a lot for such a light car. Like it was the EVO of the 80's?
NINJA-BEAR, were the old Supras called Celica-Supra? Something in my brain is saying the Supra started out as a version of the celica, but I am sure I am not sure :)
SOMTA

Was based from the Celica according to wiki. I kind of always thought that it was the premium version of a Celica for a bit also.
Toyota Supra - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Supra)
Reading some of that stuff don't know if I would ever want to own one unless I made some good clink. Sounds like everything is totally special and would have to pay over a damned premium for the parts.

HOLY CRAP that car was heavy!!! 3505 pounds? With me in it, my car weighs 3620 (I weigh 230... course, when I actually get on a scale it really says "One at a time please").
Still, the Supra is a very cool looking car and certainly can be modded to insane proportions. I thought about getting one for a commuter car but now I am thinking... not.

Yeah, they are pretty heavy. I believe the TT were rated at 320hp though.

The 98 Supra Sport was 220HP and 210 lbs ft., according to 1998 Toyota Supra Sport Liftback Specs & Data (http://www.internetautoguide.com/car-specifications/99-int/1998/toyota/supra/sport-liftback/1431/index.html) Horsepower ratings.
What was the fast year? There doesn't look to be a turbo version that year but it might just not be listed.
Gsolo

...you won't find numbers on a 98 supra twin turbo cause they didn't make many of them the last year...
nievo is right, it was 320hp for a stock 2jzgte
As for coming from a celica....yes
lets crash course this....the supra we're familiar with is the JZA80...break that down its JZ for the engine, A for the chassis, 80 is for the version so to speak
so....RA29 was the 70's celica liftback with 20R engine
then for few years late 70's to 81 the Celica Supra came to be...so you could get a RA(40 something...i'm bad with numbers) celica, or a MA46 Celica Supra.....i believe the camry started to as a Celica Camry (which explains why the two were so similiar for years) anyhow..this period is mki supra
82-86 is the MA67...i think still called a Celica XX is japan...this is mkii...Celica still used the A notation too
87 started the mkiii (ma70) Celica went to the T chassis code at this time as well as FWD....and for those that don't know in 89 there was a slight overhaul of the Supra, they changed motor mounts to modern mounts ie: JZ In 1990 in Japan they made the 1JZGTE and dropped it in Supra (and cressida which is a 4 door supra so to speak) 1jz was rated at 280 hp due to japanese rules on advertising, its closer to 300 i believe
So when they went to mkiv supra in 93 they had the larger displacement 2JZGTE at about 320hp
anyhow...thats enough of me writing

And i noticed you didn't list the turbos for the mkiv...they are CT12B obviously two of them

The site I copied the mkIV specs sounds a little low. I know for sure the mkIII is at least 3400.
CT12B's were on american supras, Japanese rigs got ct20A's.

If you wanna get fancy about the turbos :p
CT20A are ceramics...not safe to boost past about 14psi
then their's CT12A on the 1JZ non-vvti (ceramic also)
VVT-i 1JZ had a single CT20...which was ceramic but not the same as a CT20A
...Can be confusing when you think that the CT26 was used on the 7mgte, 3sgte, and even some diesels yet they're not all the same turbo :|
