My son is going to start building a f22 motor for his accord and needs some advice. The new motor he will be rebuilding came with an after market cam (not sure of any numbers yet). He wants to get the head ported and a vavle job. I suggested that he have the head milled to up the compression a little. I thought this would be a cheap upgrade without having to spend a bunch on parts like pistons and such. My question is, what would be a decent amount to take off the head without having to worry? The motor comes stock with about 8.8 to 1 C/R and he would like to get it up to around 9.5 to 1. Think this would work by just milling the head?

I gather he is not going turbo?
Can you deck the block, like domestics, to get more compression? Hmmm, Hondas are "zero clearance" engines so maybe you can't.

Factory service usualy dictates that no more than 50 thousandths be taken off in the life of the "F" series heads. So a safe amount would be about 30. A cheap way to go in the 90-93 accords is the H22 or H23 as they are a direct drop in in every aspect. All that is required is the coresponding ECU for the motor. My accord (91 4-door LX) with an H22 and bolt-ons did a 14.8@95 with full weight and that was with the super leggy geared stock LX tranny. Id say for what your gonna be into doin anything with the F22a1 its gonna be about the same amount to pick up an H23 which adds a ton more torque but is without vtec. "H" series motors are being extremely overshadowed now by the "B" which is taking a back set to the "K", so they are becoming very cheap.

Woops I meant to say he has a H22 for a rebuild. He will be using the stock auto tranny so I told him to take it easy. He has a 93 accord 5 speed parts car but he likes the auto. I think he is half girl. lol 6-3, solid 250 and is too much of a puss to learn to drive a stick. That will probably change when the tranny blows up this summer. lol

First of all is it an H22 or an F22.
If it's an H22 it has 2 cams. Neither of the two motors have a huge aftermarket when it comes to cams. Plus H22's have high compression (like 10:1).
If you want to bump up compression even more I suggest a thinner headgasket. You can get one from Cometic or maybe Mugen or Spoon.
