Its hard to get a true performace shop going in this area. Start up cost for the right equitment is very spendy, a dyno alone will set you back a ton. Staff is a huge challenge, qualified people dont want to move to Spokane to work unless they already see the shops making money. Plus its hard to find people here that have the money for work or understand the cost involved in projects. Hell Im all for supporting local businesses but I took my car to Cali to get worked on since there isnt a good enough shop in the NW for what I wanted.

If they are getting better people into the shop then thats great, things can only get better with the right plan.

Yeah he has done some bottles for me, he still charges 3 somthing a pound i belive. A & L gas are the only ones that ice the bottle down and then fill it. They charge me $2.10 a pound.

They want to be a "Tuner"/Stereo shop just like shmoe's tries to do but both fail horribly. Scott thought he could just throw money at a store and it would make it a hit. It doesn't work that way.

I have to question statements like this. Your "tuning" guy only knows Honda???? Does Honda have some sort of quantum tuning interface that no other manufacturer has? Does a Honda engine react differently to basic tuning theory than a Toyota, Nissan, Dodge or Chevy?

In a sense yes actually. You don't tune Honda engines the same as you tune a Mitsubishi engine. They react differently to certain things you do to them.

The Mitsubishi Mirage community sees this a lot with comparing to the B and D series Honda tuning ideologies.

But the concept is still the same. Spark adjustment, Fuel adjustment in cooperation with power adding equiptment.

Well, when i got to tranceworx inventory was a joke, there was no organization of the back room and not even really a showroom display. Slowly they started letting me order some stuff in and we are putting in a big order(not from ebay) for things like tial wastegates, apexi neos, walbro 255s, blah blah. The damn place still looks like a yard sale but its getting better

Not true. Margins on retail stuff is 30% at best...and that is only if you have the capital to purchase in quantity. Snow's retail is also in competition with massive warehouse distributors like Summit and Jegs. Unless a person has an immediate need for a part they won't pay Snow's inflated prices...they will wait 2 days and get the part from Summit for 30% cheaper. I havent seen the books, but I would bet the majority of Snow's revenue is in cell phone and stereo sales.

On the dyno subject; overhead is actually very low if you can pay for the dyno upfront, which is why I havent purchased one yet. Once you are up and running the dyno only requires a computer, one operator, and a driver. Being that alot of people prefer to tune their own car you would only be paying for the operators time and overhead (electricity, heat, etc.). Making a dyno profitable is more in marketing than anything else.

A company called Land-and-Sea (Dynomite Dynamometer) actually puts together a nice package about making a dyno profitable.

Then you would have an "accessories" store not a tuning shop. No dyno would make it hard to call yourself anything else. Again trying to stock anything here is crazy, not high enough demand on parts to warrent it. A few good distributers that can offer prices that can you can mark as comparable with the internet and your all good.

While you are right with the bottom line of it all, capital expenditures are not the same thing as overhead. Overhead is the cost that is un-recoverable... such as rent, property taxes, electric to keep your heat and lights on, etc. You can turn around and sell the dyno, not the overhead.

hahah hell ya you do normal gas might go bad sitting for a couple hours with all the crap they put in it. 395 for aem kit. you know whats funny, they sell 4 gallons of the mix for like 50 bucks but you can go get a winter mix washer fluid from any parts store for like 2 bucks
