A little misleading since we get a large amount of our oil/gas from Canada, but a good read nonetheless.

"Big Oil"
Until the recent hearings on energy that were held in House and Senate committees, perhaps no one realized that the United States doesn't have any big oil companies. It's true: the largest American oil company, Exxon Mobil, is only the 14th largest in the world, and is dwarfed by the really big oil companies--all owned by foreign governments or government-sponsored monopolies--that dominate the world's oil supply.
This graph tells the story; you can barely see the American oil companies as minor players on the right side of the chart. The chart was presented to the House committee by Chevron.

With 94% of the world's oil supply locked up by foreign governments, most of which are hostile to the United States, the relatively puny American oil companies do not have access to enough crude oil to significantly affect the market and help bring prices down. Thus, Exxon Mobil, a small oil company, buys 90% of the crude oil that it refines for the U.S. market from the big players, i.e, mostly-hostile foreign governments. The price at the U.S. pump is rising because the price the big oil companies charge Exxon Mobil and the other small American companies for crude oil is going up.
This is obviously a tough situation for the American consumer. The irony is that it doesn't have to be that way. The United States--unlike, say, France--actually has vast petroleum reserves. It would be possible for American oil companies to develop those reserves, play a far bigger role in international markets, and deliver gas at the pump to American consumers at a much lower price, while creating many thousands of jobs for Americans. This would be infinitely preferable to shipping endless billions of dollars to Saudi Arabia, Russia and Venezuela.
So, why doesn't it happen? Because the Democratic Party--aided, sadly, by a handful of Republicans--deliberately keeps gas prices high and our domestic oil companies small by putting most of our reserves off limits to development. China is now drilling in the Caribbean, but our own companies are barred by law from developing large oil fields off the coasts of Florida and California. Enormous shale oil deposits in the Rocky Mountain states could go a long way toward supplying American consumers' needs, but the Democratic Congress won't allow those resources to be developed. ANWR contains vast petroleum reserves, but we don't know how vast, because Congress, not wanting the American people to know how badly its policies are hurting our economy, has made it illegal to explore and map those reserves, let alone develop them.
In short, all Americans are paying a terrible price for the Democratic Party's perverse energy policies.

Calling an illegal alien an "undocumented immigrant!" is like calling
a drug dealer an "unlicensed pharmacist!"

And? This has been no secret for YEARS. You have your liberal-tree-hugging pussies to partly blame for our 4+ dollar gas prices now. We have enough oil in Alaska to supply our country for 60+ years that is KNOWN about. That's just Alaska. There have been reports of huge wells off of Ca and near Hawaii.

While the liberal-pussies are partly to blame, our foreign policy is also the reason why there are "hostile" countries towards the US and thus we pay more. Both parties are to blame for this mess we're in if you ask me. People hate us yet we rely so much on what they have to offer and we can't just drop them and use our own because of tree-hugging-hippies.

The thing is, IF we started producing our own oil and stopped relying on oil from the Middle East and other places, prices from Saudi would DROP big time as the Saudi regime cannot stay in "business" without our money. They would be forced to try and maintain our business even if it's at a much lower cost than before.

You know this... I know this... but I'm sure you know as well as I do that the "general public" is very forgetful and very naive.

I got into a conversation last weekend with an in-law and it is amazing how prevailant the "ignorance is bliss" attitude is in this country.

Just look at how much support Barack Hussein Obama is getting. Just the name scares the heck out of me. The company he has kept for the last 20+ years is scary as well.

I thought the oil reserves in ANWR were going to cause all sorts of turmoil for the animals in the area!? Instead just the opposite happens, the animals love the warm pipes and like to hang out around them because of the easy of access for vegetation.

Talking about hippies, over at the in-laws place they have some "happy ladies" (lesbians) they call em that moved in a few years back. Brother-in-law would ride his four wheeler and motorcycle through the trail back there to get to the sand pit area and ride up the mountain and when they moved in they put a stop to it. He was "disrupting the wildlife and chasing the deer through the forest." While it was all bs they put up all sorts of crap to damage his rides if he went through, fair game, their property. Now instead of the animals having a place to walk back and forth between the mountain and other spots they use the road. I wish I could have been there when a Moose got plowed by someone in a truck going 60mph to see the looks on their face. The even better part was when the cop came and pulled out the shotgun to finish off the suffering animal and they freaked out he was going to kill it. :D

Damn hippies... I think we could do a lot better without them. With all the restrictions they put in place on new things it just makes it harder to develope some newer technology to make it not as bad as it could be.

Priest River

We were out talking to some kid a week ago and he even used the same term "happy ladies" when we were talking to him. I couldn't help but laugh that someone else was using the same term.

Kinda long but interesting.
