View Full Version : S2000
I'm curious if anyone has any experience with s2k's? I spent four hours this weekend sitting in the downtown honda dealership waiting for my grandfather to pick out a new car, and I absolutely fell in love with it. I've done some research and most people say look for an 02+ and normal wear and you should be fine, but I'm curious if anyone on here has any first hand with them? I dont care that their 2 seaters, I'm keeping the 4 door. And I worked it out online with payments on the average price of an 02+ (yes with insurance) and I can easily afford it with what i'm making. Opinions?

They have no torque at all, but if you can keep the rpm's up they will run with most of the Porsche's. The engines are pretty much maxed out from the factory in the NA configuration so if you want more power a turbo will be the way to go.
The F20C is a good engine and they handle really well. All in all a fun car to have.

The first race I ever had, at the track, I smoked an s2000. She would have hung right with the older unmodded Mustang GTs though. mid to high 14's at about 95MPH. She was unmodded.

I've read a lot of people on the grand prix club have good races with them stock for stock. I myself have never raced one, although I would love the chance!:D
I do think they look pretty cool and would be a fun car to cruise around in though.

I like how it puts paid to the "front wheel drive handles better than rear wheel drive" issue.
"What's the best handling car Honda makes? Is it FWD?"
"Name the best handling FWD car."
I *think* I heard that the s2000's are great stock, but when you mod them, you start to have problems with the differential and the axles, but you would think there'd be an aftermarket. I want to say beefed up axles and pumpkins are not available? Don't quote me b/c I can't remember where I heard that.
They are definitely one of Honda's coolest looking vehicles. You can drift in the snow and rain. Mostly they are verts and chicks dig convertibles. Not a lot of privacy but I heard girls like to be shown off occasionally, in a cool car? I could be wrong but I think I also heard that girls like attention.

I had a supercharged s2000 and it was great. Stock they are fun to drive but modded they are even more fun.
You don't buy an s2k for its power. You are buying it for a bulletproof tranny, close ratio gearing, 50/50 weight balance, and amazing suspension from the factory.
With just a supercharger I hung with the black SRT4 that runs consistant low 12s and that was with really shitty Yokahoma tires. But the car is not meant to be a drag car. It really shines when you get in to some turns.
Downsides..... not a winter car at all. Miatas do better in snow. Parts are expensive. Not a lot of torque.
Check out s2ki.com or net cant remember off the top of my head if you want opinions from current owners.

oh and get a 2000. Its the only way to go. I don't care what people say. 9k redline vs. .2 liter bigger engine. 9k rpm wins stock for stock.

My username pretty much gives it away but I own an '03 and I love it! The car is decently quick stock, anywhere from 13.8's to 14.5's depending on driver and how nice they're being to the clutch and drivetrain, but that isn't the real reason to buy the car. The S will really come in to it's own when you find a twisty mountain road in the middle of summer, throw the top down and let her sing. The excellent balance and razor sharp feel in the curves will leave just about anyone grinning.
Service is not a big issue with the S, they're very reliable just like any other Honda when properly maintained. The main benefit of the '02+ is the glass rear window, though any of the 00-05's are equally mod friendly. The 06+'s are fitted with drive-by-wire and VSA which makes finding engine management a bit more difficult, but Hondata is rumored to be beta testing a K-pro that is DBW friendly. The difference between the 2.0L and 2.2L engines is negligible. I've driven several cars from either camp and personally prefer the 2.0L, but that's just me.
The aftermarket makes just about anything you can think of for the car, turbo and supercharger kits, suspension upgrades galore, trannys, rear diffs and gears, tasteful (and some not so tasteful) body mods, all the way back to the basic bolt-on's. With forced induction the car really shines. We did some engine work and tuning on a customers '02 with a Vortech supercharger kit and with 12lbs of boost his car felt great. I can't wait to boost mine!
Basically to sum it up, just go drive a few and see what you think. I have a feeling you'll be cleaning out your garage to make room for one! :)
