View Full Version : What aftermarket EFI do use??
Just taking a poll of the guys on the forum. What aftermarket EFI do you use, include application/setup (the injector type and size, sensor types etc.)
Also include your opinion of products you own now or have in the past.

I am currently using the EMS Stinger on my drag car...so far it has done everything it is supposed to...my headgasket, on the other hand, has not.
I have personally used AEM, Stinger, Performance Electronics, and SDS. I think AEM had the best user interface, but I had a hell of a time with the tech department at AEM. The system was a plug and play and they kept blaming the issue on my factory harness, when it was a blown resistor (had to send the box in 3 times). I would love to have another AEM system if I had the time or patience to build my own harness.
AEM and EMS both have a multitude of choices for sensor types. If you are using a sensor that AEM does not list you can send it in and they will send back a calibration file for that sensor. The Stinger unit has a built in A/D converter and will let you build your own calibration for your sensor. SDS uses standard GM air and water temp.

Here is the system for my car....

I just pulled everthing back out of the box this morning and laid it all out on the work bench, so I will finally be starting the swap! :)
Hopefully before the end of September I will be able to let you know what I think of it! If I am really lucky, possibly I can make it to the track on the last race. Regardless of that, I hope to make it a fair amount next season!
My first stand alone engine mgt system was also an SDS. I found it a great place to start and very easy to tune. The standard GM sensors etc make it easy to set up. Of course it is limited in that it can't really datalog, but i used it on a street application (2.3 L gm v6) and had a good experience.
i have since had a little experience with the Motech, and have built a couple of megasquirts. I find that this is the best way to really learn efi, by building it and troubleshooting it yourself. the most recent one i built, i added a set of low z injector drivers (which i also had to build). I plan to use this on my big c.i. sbc with an idividual runner intake manifold. i am working on small manifold block that will sit in between the runners and give me stable MAP signal. This is for a drag racing application so I think that the low z injectors will lend to repeatable injector flow/pulsewidth.
I have found that many hard core race guys use Big Stuff 3. Expensive, but there must be a reason for that. I have heard nothing but great things about it.
Jeff,
How is the efi conversion/ install going? Just curious if that is a sequential system or a batch fire/bank to bank?

Jeff,

Slowly, but surely!
I almost got started on building the throttle bodies last weekend.
I have twice the aluminum than I need, just in case I screw up! Here is a couple of pics of the 61mm (2.400") butterflies, shafts, aluminum plates, velocity stacks (63mm at base.), and intake manifolds.

Hopefully next weekend I will get them done. Also, I need to modify the intake manifolds. Do a little plumbing and wiring and then see if I can make it run! After that, I'll put it on the dyno and probably spend a bazzilion hours tuning it to the nat's eyelash (...or what ever that saying is!).
Once that tune is done, then it will be time to start tuning the nitrous!
I doubt I will have it all done in time for the last race this year, but should have it ready in more than enough time for next spring!
Yes, it is a sequential system.
Keep your fingures and eyes crossed for me! :)
very nice, i love to see the progress. I am going to post some pics of my project shortly.
The sequential is nice, i have my ecu set up for bank to bank. On the top end of the rpm range it does not matter much as the pulse width exceeds the valve open time and the injector is open longer, so that leads me to the next question: can you trim each cylinder? i think that is the biggest benefit of sequential on race applications
also, what size of injectors are you running (or are you running 2 per cyl)?
Here is the ECU that I built. I have done a fair amount of modifying on this unit from the standard set up to get the low z injector drivers etc. in. It has been a great way to learn EFI.

...so that leads me to the next question: can you trim each cylinder?
Yes, as a matter of fact, if I recall correctly, I can also adjust when the injection occurs for each cylinder. Also, I will be able to adjust ignition timing per cylinder. Here is a pic of my coils...

...also, what size of injectors are you running (or are you running 2 per cyl)?
84 Lb/hr. Just one per cylinder, but the computer can handle two per cylinder, or more!

:)
you have a very nice system for sure. mine is more budget, but should be very functional ( I hope).
what make are the injectors? what HP do estimate?
I plan to run either 96 lb/hr or 120 lb/hr. Mine have to be pretty big because i am running methanol.

What is your going into?
what make are the injectors?
I got them from Pantera EFI (link above), I think they might just be Bosch?
what HP do estimate?
Once it is dialed in I am thinking somewhere around 300ish at the flywheel N/A. I am thinking of going with at least two stages of nitrous. So probably around 550-600 total at the flywheel while on the bottle.
Actually, I could care less how much power it makes to the flywheel or the ground, as long as it turns the ET that I am looking for! ;)

I think the DSMers on the site are unanimous with DSMLink. Not too exciting, sorry. DSMLink + GM MAF + GM IAT + GM MAP + any WB02 = all we need for up to around daily driven 700AWHP. We have an easy out in avoiding a full stand alone system.

I cant tell from the pic, but most injectors are built by bosch or delphi and marketed under a few different names. I looked at the website, it said it comes with o2 sensors, are they narrow or wideband? Makes sure you take them out if you run higher than 100 octane (or any leaded fuel), i believe it will ruin them pretty quick. :(
Is the crank trigger a hall effect sensor, or a VR type sensor, looks like it must have a sprocket with a missing or a long tooth similar to a VR.
so if you are looking for the ET, that must mean that when you tune on the dyno you will be looking to optimize the area under the torque curve rather than the HP curve?
My ECU is going into my dragster (SBC) if all goes well. I have a crower IR intake (similar to hilborn or enderle) that i have machined for EFI injectors, i am in the process of modeling the manifold and system in solidworks so that i can start machining/fabing the parts. I am gathering the parts for the engine, i have a set of Dart pro 1 heads, 230cc intake runners, 2.08 intake valves. It will be an aftermarket block, somewhere between 427-434 CI, i am shooting for about 700HP N/A. That is why i was asking HP of your engine, that is what drives injector size, of course I have 8 cylinders putting out slightly more than your 4 ;)

Please enlighten me on what 'DSM' is, i honestly have no idea and could not find anything on cyberspace :stupid:

Haha you're lucky to see daily driven stock turbo dsm's let alone 700whp... this is out of sarcasm, feel free to post all the links you want and brag about shepherd, just go check out Eric's DSM Graveyard sometime and ya'll will know what I'm talking about.
3258 - DSM's most commonly refer to Eclipse, Talon, Laser etc.

No, I just thought they were interesting. I run all gm stuff & use the ls series engines. I get PCM's from 99 & newer pickups because they are cheap & cut all the extra crap off of the harness. I run just the MAP, TPS, IAT, Cam & Crank sensors. Tune it in Speed Density with my wideband & I'm done.
I have only gone up to 72# @ 58 PSI injectors with good idle/driveability. I am interested in going low imp some day like you have.
Finally, here are a few sketches of my IR intake manifold with EFI conversion. I plan to run this intake set up with methanol next year on my dragster. I have almost all of the parts, i just need to machine the velocity stacks etc.

Good to see some models of the set up! Are you using the MS to control fuel alone, or spark as well? Can't wait to see this thing come together. Hopefully I can get out your way during the summer and give you a hand.

Looks good! The Bonneville motor I helped tune was using an electromotive setup. They had it set up for speed/density, but I personally think that alpha N would have worked just fine for them. The management and screen layouts were pretty easy to navigate, and the owners of the car have had good luck with the company as far as customer service.

Autronic is awesome
Motec is expensive
Stock ecu based software is easy
AEM is troublesome (for most, not all applications)
Electromotive is outdated (at least the software that I've used was)
Holley Powercommander is good
... haven't played with FAST and I've heard good things about ViPec although I haven't used it.

I re-posted some pics of the MS setup i have earlier in this thread, they got deleted somehow. I think i will make a thread with the whole project, stay tuned. I have been messing with MS for a while now, so let me know if you need any help, i am always learning new stuff, and i am sure you will have stuff to teach me before long.
