View Full Version : audi..
why does everyone seem to hate audi? I'm just curious.. I have a friend who owns a silver 96 a4 2.8 5spd, in perfect condition, 18's and a body kit... and its quattro, and he just bought an 04 recaro s4 with the 4.2v8 chip'd with a cold air and exhaust running 396 hp to the wheels. and he offered me the a4 for 6k, i've loved the car sense he bought it.. and love driving it. and i'm a sedan guy... i own a 97 civic sedan.. but its a slow progress when u find a ton of rust and previous accident damage. and i need a car to drive. So why do ppl hate em? i'm super curious.

Because German car guys ride the 1.8T nutsack to no end but the fact of the matter is that the Honda B-series is superior in every way and when you slap a turbo on a B18 you will make a hell of a lot more power than the 1.8T.
Fuck VAG

Yeah, Audi a4's, especially back in the 90's aren't built for speed, and they arent very reliable. Which is a terrible problem because they are expensive to work on, very expensive. German Cars= only buy new with Warranty. I have a friend with an 02 A4 with the 3.0 litre 6 and its slow as shit and already crapped out at 50K miles. (Owner is a girl, not beat) I have also driven a Passat with the 1.8t whcih is the same as Audi, and the thing is Dangerously slow. THey arent built for performace, and they arent built well, certainly wouldnt want one with all that power, just waiting to Blow.

The guy I raced at the track had a new Quattro. The clutch slipped on him on his second launch and it was never right again. The little Audis weigh like 4100 pounds. 600 pounds more than the new Mustang. So without 400+ hp, they will be dogs.

I actually really like the styling of most Audi's. That being said most of the base models are extremely underpowered and they are very expensive to work on. The RS models are badass though.

I love em. A friend had an S4 (cant remember the year) with some a few mods and they car moved. The A4 was not built as a performance car, but are great to drive around town. Ive done work on a few and never really had an issue with it being difficult...but I do drive VW so I guess I am biased.

Yes! I love arguing with extremes.
The average turbo B18C is going to clean the floors compared to the average 1.8T.

Yes, but the average person is going to like driving a 1.8t better then a turbo B18C.

(anyone else I should add?)
edit: depends on the platform of the car, I see no difference comfort or any other driveability wise where a VW1.8T would be better in a Rabbit (Golf, whateva). Like a Civic hatch. But, the difference between an A4 and a 92 Civic is obvious

I said "average" person, not many people on this site would fit that category. The average person isn't going to want to rev to 5k to get the performance. 1.8t's are known for lots of torque and little lag.

Exactly...lots of torque at 2k RPM, big drop off on power and torque the close you get to redline.
Great for getting groceries...bad for performance applications.
The only German car I would ever own is a BMW or Porsche and MAYBE a Mercedes for a DD if I didn't want a clutch.

What would you define as the "average" Turbo B18C?
As I see it a Turbo B18 is a major modification being that the Honda does not come with a factory B18 turbo. If we are going to compare major modification to major modification I believe the 1.8T will win :)
Well the thing being. The audi will be my daily, I've looked around though.. and found i might put out some more money and pick up an audi allroad, 2.7L twin turbo wagon with a 6 speed. And either way i'm still keeping my civic as it's completely disassembled and going through major rust repair, and gathering some parts for its swap.
The s4's are badass anyway you look at them. 4.2 v8 or the 2.7 twin turbo. if i had 15-20k i'd pick one up.. but eh.. no. The allroad with the same motor as the TT s4 is 5k less depending on where you look.
I priced out everything i want into the civic.. and it rounded out to 8k plus shipping, plus install plus a good tune. Thats with full suspension with tein coilovers, b18c-r, lsd trans, all the parts for the swap, and all the body panels it needs replaced. I could pick up a turbo b18 hatch for 6-8k in portland.. and the thing is.. i like having 4 doors, and a bit of power to boot. but nobody mods 4 doors because there heavy as heck compared to moding a hatch and running 11's lol

Sooo what, lol.
It all depends on taste. Ive driven a stock 1.8t car, modded 1.8t car, stock civic and obivously my civic. I dont like building boost real early in the rpm range. I get 28mpg in town in my civic. If your just puttin around in swapped 1.8t golf that builds boost at 2k, the best you get is maybe 23mpg on a good day. Plus when your in those cars at a light and just tryin to roll out of the light like normal it completely sounds like their tryin to race. As far as price goes.....im a grand total of $6200 into my civic including buyin the car. Theres just so many ways that this argument can go. I choose the biased side obivously.

On B5s you have to drop the engine to get to it because it's on the backside of the engine...

Don't forget reliability in this subject.. While the 1.8t will handle over 300whp safely and reliably on a stock engine, I'm hard pressed to believe a B16 customized turbo will be able to do the same.

Your right...mines been doin 350-400 all year on a stock bottom end and head. Done right a stock block B18 (i dont compare B16 since its .2 litres less) with a vtec head can make 450 on a safe tune and last for quite some time. Ive personly never seen a stock 1.8t make over 300hp and last longer than 6-8 months. And god forbid a 1.8t blows up....how much money is it to come up with another solid bottom end....1200 maybe. Whereas a stock B18 bottom end....hell, even a complete jdm 40k mile motor can be had for $600-700.
In the end, it all comes down to your taste in cars. I dont prefer german cars, except for the high end cars cause theres a reason you pay 100k+ for a Porsche 996tt. They dont break down.
but workin where i work, i see the way all cars are engineered and what it takes to put them together, take them apart, make them last. And you cant get around the japanese produced cars. Germans dont engineer for a long life of an automobile, maybe in the 60's, but new stuff is designed to last 4-7 years before major overhaul is needed.
but as usual, were getting waaay off topic. Audi= high end VW=more money for repairs. Even at my work for 10 year old used audi parts you still spend a good chunk of money. From what ive seen the only parts priced highr than audi parts are Mercedes parts.
In the end, its your car, you make the decision based on your tastes and needs. My need is to go 10's as cheap as possible and so far im doin a good job i think.

How about we compare stock to stock then. Honda doesnt need a 1.8 litre turbo to run 14's. They get 14's from a 1.8 litre NA..... IMO its pathetic that it takes a turbo to get GTI's to run what they run.. HONDA FTW.

14's stock huh? Maybe on a perfect day with a perfect driver. In stock form (with the exception of the type R model) the stock b16 and b18 engines will run low 15's all day long.
okay.. well then your talking about stock to stock, the best civic in stock form, probably an si running eh idk.. well.. an audi in stock form, can be a rs4, r8, s4 etc. after riding in my friends S4 4.2L v8 with a ton of power. i went down to sac and bought his a4, silver, lip kit, 2.8L, intake, exhaust, and awd. I love civics. but awd ftw in winter. and launching an awd car is fun as hell. Its just plain sexy as hell. silver with a nice dark tint, and 4 doors. its slow mind you, runs like a 16.2 in the 1/4 but the tracks closed after tomorow untill next year so whats the point of building a track car when you can have a fun street car that isnt as fast but looks 10x better. Only mod is going to be about a 50-75 shot of spray.
pic.. shes on some 18" linea sport rims, lowering kit droped it about 2", ram air intake, some off name brand but awesome sounding muffler, with a custom y-pipe, darkish tint, and an ebay special lip kit painted by me when my friend owned it.

er my comment came out wrong... I meant that it's easier to do boltons on a car already boosted and make power then it is building fully customized turboed car...
yeah.. see, you've built nice cars before 1320talon, look at ur sig. you know where to go, what to buy, how to install it, and how to do it on a budget. I dont need a track car. I need a good year round car, and awd is definatly a plus. having a fast car is nice. i mean. on the freeway the car is fast. but its no 1/4 mile car, it'd probably do decent at autox with the mods aswell.
