View Full Version : Why me?

This weekend was supposed to be the start of something good. Bought a house with enough space to work on the cars and its just nice to be a home owner once again. As if I didn't have enough going on with moving and unpacking everything, the place flooded. My washer and dryer were in storage while I was renting. My roomate hooked them up and started a load, we left to go get something to eat and came back to free-standing water in the kitchen/dining rooms. It made its way into 2 of the 3 bedrooms. Apparently a mouse chewed through a rubber hose in the washer. It was trying to fill up, but couldn't because of the hole so it was constant water flow for an hour or more. The carpet is already totally torn up and the pad removed. huge fans to dry everything. The worst part is that the floor is all laminant. Most likely a total loss there. From everyone I've talked to, sounds like insurance will not cover the damage because of the circumstances. I'm waiting for a call back but its not looking good. doors, molding, floor and various other things are more than likely ruined and have to be replaced. The house is brand new and I'm already talking about ripping things apart to fix them. What a joke. All I can say is life isn't fair. Car problems are one thing. Living space is a whole nother story. I'm just really down on life right now and filled with the "what ifs?" that are driving me crazy. Like what if we wouldn't have left right away and all that BS. Fuck it, what more can I say.

Man that sucks.....I had something similar happeen to me this year. Old washer hose broke when I was out of town and flooded part of the basement of the house I was renting. I was lucky since there was a drain right by the washer and the water didnt really get to much.
Sometimes bad stuff happens, dont get stressed....Im sure better days are ahead.

Well, I was going to post about my birthday weekend- car breaking down on friday, my family leaving on Friday for a week without me (the day before my bday!), Eric getting kicked out and moving in with my fam temporarily, getting sick- however, I think Jamie beat me on that one...sorry to hear Jamie- I hope everything works out for you!

Try thinking of it as your first home improvement. Put a nice dark wood floor in and try to see things will happen and find some good in it. Owning the house is still great and it's still standing.

holly fuck. I don't see why Insurance wouldn't pick that up. Is it classified under flood insurance or somthing?

That's really shitty.. atleast it wasn't sewer water like the two feet of standing water in my basement until this sunday was... but I know replacing everything is going to be a bitch...
Oh and did you get the warranty on the house when you bought it that is supposed to cover major appliances, electrical, etc? We did and it covered all of our basement damage...

Insurance will only cover for flood if it's a natural disastor not because a hose of yours got chewed up by a mouse. I could be wrong but that's the way I understand it IF you have flood insurance.
Look at it this way, you didn't want that carpet anyways. :) Sorry to hear that happened to ya!

Its still up in the air as far as the insurance goes, but not lookin good. I don't think I've talked to so many different people about an event in my life. I spent hours on the phone with the insurance people yesterday. The floor is getting worse so for sure its a loss. The baseboards are swelling as well pretty bad. Thanks for the sympathy on the whole deal. Looks like its going to be a while before it all gets worked out. I turned off all the fans that the guy had set up, pretty much everything is dry and I'm tired of listening to them. I missed more work yesterday because of it too, so I'm losing on several ends.
Looks like all my "fun" things I was going to spend my money on are taking a back seat which really sucks. I hate nothing more than to save money and have plans only to have everything change and have nothing to show for it. So much for Vegas, so much for my big brake kit, drive shaft still has to happen regardless or I'm going to find myself in another bad situation. Thanks again for the support, sorry to hear you got the boot Eric.

Jamie, Don't let them tell yo no. Their job is to try to get you to believe they won't cover it. Talk to a lawyer.

OH yeah, if they don't pay, all hell is going to break loose. Not something I will give up on easily. Everyone has been super nice from there, but when it comes down to paying for repairs we'll see. I really am tired of thinking about it. Depresses me to be in my house in such disorder. I was worried about ordering blinds and building shelves for all my garage crap. Funny, but not really, how things take terrible twists and all priorities change in a blink of an eye.

Tell me about it. Not even 1 month after we bought our new house the furnace crapped out and it cost us close to 4 grand to have a whole new one installed. That's the only downfall to owning vs renting, when something breaks it comes out of your pocket.

Insurance companys are so fucked up...

Looks like everything may turn out ok. Minus my deductible and I was quoted a week and a half to 2 weeks to complete the job. Just such a waste considering everything was new and now it all has to be ripped out, baseboards/doors and all and finished over again. Not impressed with Allstate's response to the whole thing and everyone I've talked to has said they are one of the best. they dropped the ball on this one for sure. Took way too long to get someone out to look at the damage. I'm tired of living in a disaster area. I can't wait to finally unpack my things once and for all.

In order to get whatever you want from insurance companies, just say these magic words...my "insert random family memeber" lawyer friend...
family lawyer friends work for free and insurance companies know this.
