View Full Version : 10-bolt front axle
Well, I'm thinking my front axle is toast, I pulled the hubs, cleaned them and inspected them and to the un-trained eye they look fine. I locked both of the hubs and spun it (tires off the ground obviously) and there is a prety bad clicking inside the housing somewhere. I really would reather not go and get a new axle from pull and save mostly because I dont want to deal with finding one with the same gears, and 20 years of rust on the bolts.. also i'm not sure but i think only suburbans have the dual shock setup up front and i dont want to have to find one. yet i might end up going that route.
Any tips? This is my winter rig.. and I definatly dont want to get stranded.. its going to be hell enough driving a long ass tank on ice and through snow.. but w/o 4wd.. screw that...

Were is the clicking coming from?? by the pumkin? or by were the hubs are? are they factory hubs? they could not be ingageing all the way and you could be hearing the gears inside the hub clicking. Test it, drop it back on the ground, lock your hubs back up make sure they click in, and then turn a tight turn on dry pavement. It will hop you will be able to tell if its in 4wheel drive or not.

i have a housing sitting here if you would like it, it is out of a mid 80's K5 blazer, not sure on the gears but if you would like it, 75.00 would release it. call me if you are interested,
I can also swap gears or install new gears for you if needed, for a additional charge.

I took apart my hubs, and re-did them. I have a warn manual conversion on there, with the t-case conversion too from the previous owner, I got to looking and my U joint is literally broken apart, moreso on the driver side, and the axle shaft also has a lot of play from the look of it. Any quotes from people on here to do some u-joints or where to get them/how to install them? I got quoted 250 from my grandfather's mechanic and well.. this poj isnt worth that much to me.
I'm seriously thinking about not even bothering keeping this thing for a winter rat.. I want to pick up a YJ or minorly troubled TJ, its kinda sucky working on something so rusted that bolts just break, and if the previous owner did something and stripped it, he just left it there.. (which happened with my hubs so i had to fix that today.. fun stuff)

U-joints are insanely easy. You just remove the clips holding them in place and tap them out with a mallet. Any service manual should have a section on removing and replacing u-joints. When I was in high school, a u-joint was like $12. Heavy duty 4x4 u-joints? I have no idea now. Easy as pie.
:smokin:
Don't drive with the hubs locked, until you get the front ones replaced. Mythbusters pole vault. If the joint is clicking it must be in bad shape.
I think you put them in a vise, to press the pins back into the joint, rather than using the mallet to re-seat them. The joints on my truck need snap-ring pliers to remove but the ones on the Mustang can be popped out with needlenose pliers. Very easy.
After reading it it doesnt seem too dang bad, i'm going to go to an offroad shop tomorow and pick up some spicer 760 u joints.. they seem to be a decent deal, i'm prety positive they are messed up as they clank and visually shift when you spin it when the hub is locked and its off the ground.. it looks like the cap is busted or something, i'll take some video tomorow
