My kid just got a 88 crx dx. I got it from my sister who baught it new.It has a ton of miles (211K) and runs like a top. But he is 17 so he wants a new motor. I know a lot of people have done a lot of different swaps on here and we need some help. What would be the best bang for the buck? He was thinking a d16 with a turbo. I was thinking a B series no turbo with a little NOS. I know the d16 would be cheaper (without the turbo for now), but I think a B would be more reliable and have the extra HP. Also, anyone willing to help with the swap?

My crx was a b16a swap. It was very fast and very reliable. It was a jdm b16a with civic type r cams, intake and exhaust and did a 13.9@96. and on the way to seattle it got 36mpg. for the motor and tranny expect to spend $1000+. then you need mounts to do it right and shift linkage and axles. the whole swap can usualy be done for under 2k. you can save money by picking up a non vtec b18. Now, if you wanted to do a turbo "d", mostly what you need to do is convert your dx into a mpfi instead of the dual point setup you currently have. then as long as the "D" you swap in is in good shape you can then turbo it. to put together a junkyard turbo kit expect to spend around $500-1000. At that point you can safely run around 6psi of boost and be reliable, but for fuel economy thats not gonna be good.

Most bang for the buck? turbo d16 of course!!! :P

yeah, i'm a little biased but the money you're gonna pay for a B series swap(motor, ecu, tranny, mount kit) + Nawzzz.... minimum of $2500, and thats homie hook-up price.

Turbo d16+ Suzuki Vitara pistons+ boost = budget build FTW!!!

It dosn't take much power to get those EF chassis into the 12s. Feel free to pm me about using Suzuki Vitara pistons. :)

China made Eagle knock-offs.

I got them from a company that caters to Honda guys, TunerToy. Great customer service! $225 shipped

Suzuki Vitara pistons. $125 shipped.

You do the math, building a SOHC can be done cheap cheap if you can do the labor.

As a matter of fact there is a guy in LakeWood, Wa who currently holds the HP record for these Vitara builds, 416whp! The runner up is actually from Idaho, 405whp.

I think i was 3rd? Who knows people are doing crazy things with these 1.6 liter motors. I'm currently limited to my 450cc injectors, in a week or two i'll see if i can hit 400.

In all seriousness I agree with Meng (krypto).

Over the last few years the D-series market has expanded a lot (for turbo guys anyway) and now people are making a lot of power for not a lot of money (compared to other imports).

Well the kid went out and picked up a b18. He got the tranny, ecu and a fully taken apart motor for $600. The guy took the motor apart and had it honed, crank polished, turbo pistons, head ported and polished and all new parts before he ran out of money. Now all we need to do is put a few good parts in it and put it together. Not a bad deal. He has about $1800 in reciepts (SP).
