ok so this was given to me by one of my dads friends...its a 70 duster..slant 6 automatic.. it came with a 360 that needs to be built and a 904 tranny.. its 100% stock.. all the interior is there but needs to be redone...has all the rally wheels.. we picked it up from medford oregon last fall.. the car has been sitting for about 10 years but was inside a barn for about 7 of them.. its pretty good shape.. no rust and theres only a few dents on the quarter panel and a few little dings hear and there.. not really sure what i want to do.. i really like the pro touring look.. but i dunno

lol. my parents painted the house a couple summers ago..lol i didnt notice that it looks so close till you said something.... i definatly want to paint it a different color.. was thinking maybe hemi orange, or a gunmetal color with the 340 stripes.. want to build the 360 good for 12s or something.. just want to make it a nice street car

Here's rule number one about Abody mopars - HEADERS SUCK! If you get some dont cheap out on headmans or hookers, they hang so low you cant drive anywhere especially in this town. If you have to have some, get TTI's but they are money. The installation is such a bitch that if you are shooting for a street car running a 12ish quarter I say use manifolds. They actually flow pretty well and are worth the non headache and busted knuckles. 360's are a little low on compression stock so if your bottom end looks good and it doesnt need to be bored, use it and just shave the iron heads for compression. A good X-spec iron head (1.6 2.02 valves) will get you all the power and flow a guy needs. The split pattern cams out there right now are really good too. An Air Gap intake and dont over size the carb - easy mistake to make but dont do it! a simple MSD6a and 2.5 inch full exhaust is a simple but really good proven and reliable set up. 8 3/4 Rear ends are a royal rich bitch to find but the 7.25 stock rear that the 6 cylinder cars have kind of suck donkey nuts. They'll hold ok power and you might be able to find a posi unit but it'll cost. Gearing is up to the users preference but keep in mind you dont want to spin that 360 at 3000rpm at highway speeds for long times. Tire size can help that but keep the converter sized right if you buy a new one. The stock 904 converter if i remember right stalls at 1900. I think. speaking of which keep the 904, its a great tranny for good power and its lighter than the 727 that everyone thinks they need. An Abody with full interior will still weigh around 3400 pounds but Mopars make power, no doubt about it.
can you tell yet I'm a dodge guy?
I'm saying to keep stock engine stuff not only because it quite honestly works but also because working on a mopar will empty your wallet faster than you can believe.
I'm a big fan of pro touring and the suspension can be set up right for it. i doubt a 6 cylinder car had discs up front but if it does you are a lucky person. You can either use the stock discs (or a stock conversion) or pay a hell of a lot of money for some very good brakes from Willwood.
The really only place for stuff on darts, dusters, valiants, demons, scamps... is forabodiesonly.com
Or you could be really different and cool and do a slant 6 turbo pro touring duster. Those 225's can really be hopped up and a forced induction 6 cylinder with a lightened to around 3000 pound car could get some decent mileage. Make it brake, make it turn... pretty sweet. I think there are one or two on turboforums(turbomustangs) that are pretty cool.
Popular Hot Rodding magazine has had a demon and some rockstar's duster in it a few (five?) issues ago, they pretty much are the pro touring magazine so it might be worth searching their site and seeing what you can find about those cars.
Anyway obviously if you want to bounce some ideas off me feel free, I dont get to talk abodies much these days.

damn.. lol.. ya im pretty excited about this.. the 360 is a low 80s motor so i think its got the junk heads on it.. the engine is definatly going to need rebuilt.. whats the widest wheel i can get under it with out mini tubing it?? do you know sefus

Hmmm... it looks like you need a turbo in there...:)

ya.. lol.. id really like to do a small block tt.. if i were to do that i would probably build the motor back to basically stock and just do a cam or whatever then just get some good name brand turbos 61mm or bigger.. and just run it at a decent boost level that the factory engine could hold.. that would be fun...

Pretty much a no go on turbo unless you get rid of your inner fenders. I had the guys from Wrench Rat Turbo Systems checking mine out the other day and its just too tight without some pretty drastic sheet metal cutting. Now a Pro Charger on the other hand...
But then you'd want headers so you'd still be either battling space or cutting up stuff. I guess its what you'd want to do with it.
A 9.8:1 compression iron head 360 thats tuned well for 92 octane will get you a deep 12 second car all things considered. Abodies dont transfer weight like a fox body mustang will but they will still put power to the ground. Any power adder v8 in a 3000 pound car better be in the 10's if you ask me.
Without a minitub you still have a little room to play with backspacing but generally a 245 60 on a 7 x 15 inch rim in the rear is THE size. If I remember right a 255 is as big as you can go stock but if you max the rear you'll want to step down a little for the front because you'll rub when cranked all the way over on turns. Or at least my dart did when it had all four tires the same size (daily driver so rotating was nice). A lot of guys stick with a 14 inch rim but i dont ever remember running one. The stock wheel wells are a little tight and depending on the shape of your well lips you might be able to adjust sizing but honestly if you look at what some of the guys in small tire classes are able to do, you dont need a lot of tire to go really freaking fast. If I was just making a cruiser and road car out of it I'd probably leave the tires at something not too big (i.e. expensive) so I wouldnt shit a brick everytime I had to buy new ones.

Heres another thought: if you want to really have fun run heads and intake from a mid 90's Dakota and hook up the fuel injection system. Better rocker design in those heads too. Dont know how much power you can support out of the stock injectors but it'd be worth looking into if you have to get different heads anyway. Now there's your pro-touring set up.

hmm.. thanks for all the support sefus.. im not sure if i have seen your car or not.. not realy sur where to start on it.. i guess first thing is pull the slant 6 out of it.. know any one who would want it lol..

lol I might actually know someone who would take the /6. I'll shoot an email out. Unless you grew up in Cheney not too many people would remember it since the tags on it are from 03. It'll be puttin around sometime though.
Be careful where you start. I bought mine still running with a 330k mile 318 and said I'd just drop a fresh engine in it over a few weeks. Like I said, that was in 2003. All I can say is KEEP IT SIMPLE!!!!!!

Ive been following that one too. Alot of good detailed work. I'm excited to get my dart rolling again but am really stoked to start on my road car - a 68 mustang. Its going to be much more in the 'do everything' style.

i'm not too sure you will be able to bolt on the 90's dakota, or ram head and intake onto your 360. The 318 and 360's that came on newer (87 i think) and up are the magnum series motors. The magnum motors a completely different then the LA series motors that are found in older mopars.

Magnum heads on a 318 are pretty common. Kind of the inbetween of stock irons and expensive aluminums. Never done it myself but i dont see why the FI intake wouldnt work (although most people pick an aftermarket carb intake fitted for the the magnum heads) and since a 318 and 360 are basically the same size... well the answer is just a google search away if thats the course a person wanted to take.

the only advise i have is.. stay down on compression unless you have e-85 in mind... $10 per gallon adds up fast when you get 5-6mpg.... and really takes the fun out of driving the car.. other than that stay with it...
sr240
10-29-2011, 04:33 PM
E85 is the plan... Probably just buy it by the drum or e98....
