My brother and I used to hunt groundhogs (identical to marmots, as far as I can tell), back in Maryland, before deer season, to get used to our guns again.

I used a .30-06 and my brother used his .243. Overkill?

Jon shot one in it's hole, which was spectacular.

That same day, he got one way up in a tree (who knew they climbed?). That turned out to be a huge mistake. Never shoot a 10 pound bag of meat/fat/guts, while it is over your head. No matter how tempting the shot might seem. It's a really bad idea. Like a big, wet pinata-bomb.

In our hair. Yeah, it came down all over us. This fine mist of blood and small bits that quickly dried into sticky, jerky-like stink spots. Keep your mouth closed!

The drive home was memorable. Neither of us spoke for almost an hour.
At the driveway, Jon said "I didn't kno-"
