im dead set on getting a 700 for this upcoming season. so broke i have no money for food, but ill have a bunch of money left over for this semester so why not fill my fridge with meat? i was wondering if anyone had any helpful advise on deciding between the sps-tactical, the target tactical, or the sendero sf II. i want to get back into competition shooting but want to hunt with it too. .308 rounds. i loved my dads m40a1, the a3 shot just as well but a little more comfortable for me. if anyone has any experience with these give your opinion

Get two guns.
One for competition is not going to be fun to pack, to heavy and the scope would be all wrong.

I also will make a recommendation on not getting a new Rem. Their quality control has tanked in the last few years. The older models are still stellar. But for a new rifle Rem is easily beaten.

thats what ive heard. funny thing is, i had a savage 7mm about 5 years ago. 240 bucks, tack driver right outta the box with the factory bore sight. aparently there all like that. savage has made some great, but ugly rifles lately

Savage is the way to go if you like to do things yourself. I have a custom 300 RUM Rem 700 based gun that is my dedicated long range elk gun. Also have a savage I built for cheap and they are by far the way to go unless you like paying a gun smith to rebarrel your gun when its done. The barrel nut design on the savage means you can have several barrels you can switch yourself. Also the bolt heads are cheap to change out unlike the rem 700. Also most savages from the factory shoot amazing, don't like the stock? Go buy a $100 stock from bell and carlson. Stock Rem 700 trigger sucks so you will need a smith to tune it up. Savage has the accutrigger which is not bad but I went with a much better one. If you want to build a gun start with the Stevens as its the same action minus the accutrigger and cheaper.

.308's are something of the past there are much better options out there these days. Unless you plan on shooting some specific class or are not into long range at all. Sendero's are nice guns but you are looking at around $900-1000 for a heavy carry gun. I don't mind weight both my guns are around 15lbs and I carry them all over the mountains. If you're looking for a cheap way to fill the fridge full of meat than realize hunting ends up costing a ton more $$$ than just buying meat.

Here's my ugly 25-06 AI Savage. This is mostly my under 1000 yard deer / coyote gun.

Sorry, but I find this pretty funny... Guess we were dumb ass' for using the m24 as a sniper rifle when I was in the military. They are still using it today along with the 50 cal.:kenny:

He isn't saying it is a shitty round. He is saying technology has advanced, and there are better rounds. Example: 300WSM. The 308 is a great round, but there are greater rounds ;)

;););) Of course... Saying you have no range at all with a .308 is ridiculous. That is the only point of the reply I thought was un-educated.:D

well the marine snipers use the new rem 700 base with the b&c a5 stock. swat snipers use the sps-t with the 20" barrel. so i assumed they are good guns. snipercentral.com has a 700 setup fully customed for under 1200 and it comes with a 300 win mag setup as an option

That looks like a nice rifle... Should go for the adjustable stock and porting. Need a Ghillie Suit? Just kidding People in Spokane might get a little concerned.

M24 also had .338 Lapua ....expensive stuff......

Rumor has it they are going to .300 win mag.

I like the 7mm mag in the Rem700...i dont know anything about the newer quality issues i'm not that up and up.

300RUM would do good too

But a cheap used .308 is not bad.

It all depends on what you do and how you feel. Alot of guys refuse to carry a gun over 12lbs...others could care less.

If you really want to go long range and money isn't an issue look at .338 Edge

Definitely true... This happened after I got out. I miss that so much but wouldn't take it over civilian life again. It was always fun playing with the latest toys though. The AR platforms are awesome, especially with so many options.
How much for the SASS?

i think i might go with that setup, i definately want the a5 stock, being as how from them its only an extra 150, and it comes with the bedding plate. and yea, i have a ghillie suit already. this isnt my first time hunting, just first time purchasing my own rifle. ive got a full suit, tree shoes, grapling hook, a good boot knife. im mostly a bowhunter. its more fun, more personal, more stealth imo. but i really want a good rifle, especially one the corps uses cause im thinking about going in. i was suppose to be shipped off to basic a few years ago but i got a girl pregnant. got a 96 on the asfab or whatever it is called

If you are thinking about going in then buy what you would be training with, anything else would make you mad that you downgraded when you went in :-)

I won two competitions with my 700. One at Eastern, against the ROTC and another at the Downriver Range. Both on a stock barrel. I wanted to get a bull barrel, but decided against it since the rifle's accuracy was already better than mine was. I floated the barrel with a business card. Ghetto tactical.

That's a good score... would be a waste using it on Combat Arms though, on the other hand if I were to go back in I would still go back Combat Arms. Are you definite on wanting to be a Marine?

the marines is the only branch id go into. people have been telling me to go into the navy but i couldnt do it. the reason i havent joined already again is cause im going to school to be an aerospace engineer and currently have straight A's across the board. but i cant seem to stop thinking about joining so i trying to make the right decision for ME.

Finish the degree, and go officer, or go enlisted, finish school, go officer.

Aerospace engineer screams Air Force.

WRONGBOXSILVERADO

If you want everything handed to you go in the Air Force(better chow too), if you want to be in the Shi* go Marine or Army... If you want to boss around a bunch of people who have been in five times longer than you and have permanent cross airs on the back of your head become an officer(twice the pay)!

He already nailed the girl, so really, the coffin is all that's left.

I dated an Air Force girl. She said "the first step in going TDY is booking the hotel." Also the Air Force bought her boobs. All I can say is THANK YOU TAXPAYERS!

The Navy has SEALs, carriers, planes, subs, astronauts, etc..

Where are you planning on hunting? Woods? Prairie? Mountains? Almost any .308 caliber will do the job on anything smaller than elk (not a .30-30). In the woods, you will not want a scope, for the <100 yard shots. You will not need a 7mm mag for deer. You can use a target rifle for hunting, just fine, as long as you don't mind heavy. I don't mind heavy and notice no difference, at the end of the day, whether I am carrying my .22 or my .50 cal muzzle-loader.

Most rifles used for target shooting have adjustable triggers, but I leave mine set pretty light, even for hunting. Safety is on until I am ready.

.30-06 has killed every animal I have ever needed to shoot, but I don't think it'd be my first choice for grouse or bear.

If you can find a 40x... they are the shit. Good luck with that though.

Jetblack

Also, a smart move is to get a .22 with the same kind of action as your hunting rifle. Good to practice with.

.308s and carbine barrles are ok for charging prairie dogs. I'd use that at a minimum under 50 yards, it's your life those raging dogs can be deadly. 375 H&H or a 416 Rigby would be prefered for nasty game like that.
