So I traded a talon for this 95 z28. 10 miles after trading it develops a rod knock. I'm sure the little fucker had no idea...NOT!!! Anyway the engine is coming out and figure this would be the time to do some upgrades. I don't want to dump a lot of money in it but wouldn't mind gaining a little hp. If I decide to keep the car it will have a single turbo :) What should I do?

Also the damn thing always pops out of reverse. Is this an easy fix?

Popping out of reverse is a common T56 problem needs a new syncro and the best advise I can give you as far as the motor is junk that LT1 and throw a LS in that thing lol

Might look up how complicated it would be to upgrade to a OB2 setup and use a newer tuner. Don't have to do an LS swap in it, can always look for a LQ4/LQ9 (6.0L) to throw in it. Shouldn't be overly complicated to swap into a newer Gen III motor. If you are going the boost route too it should live up to a bit more abuse providing you don't run it crazy lean.

For the tranny issue look up Tickperformance. They sell individual pieces for the T56 and could hook you up with the specific parts that you need.

With pulling the drivetrain, if you haven't started already, do it from the bottom if you have the resources to get the body up in the air high enough. I am sure doing work on the LT body cars isn't much different than the LS cars. Here is a link to a guide that shouldn't be much different from yours. http://www.keliente.com/engine.htm

If you do plan to stick with just the LT motor, a simple Cam swap would net some great power along with a decent set of heads. Don't know of any great LT specific forums off the top of my head but I am sure you could find used setups dirt cheap and plant you close to the 400 RWHP mark if you go with a fairly aggressive setup.

i would go to D&D performance for the transmission parts, and as far as i know the LT1 internals are the same as any other chevy 350, so in that case any sbc rod and piston set would go right in, its the crank thats different IIRC its been years since we had our LT1 car but to be honest i would do like these guys said, buy a 6.0 and convert it over shouldnt take much to do at all plus youll be much happier when you do get it running with the turbo casue these gen 3 motors can take some abuse... just look at nitroused383s car, its got alot of miles and abuse and is still running like a champ. but the car looks good man sorry to hear about the motor problem but at the very least you got yourself a good start.

all you need is parts from a 350 after 86, pre 86 is 2 piece rear main after 86 is 1 piece seal.

My friend had a '94 lt1 based 383 built for his '72 nova by Jeff Cassell and it was $3000 out the door. He had no block or heads and bought those from Jeff also for that price. Rebuild that motor for boost and invest in a good set of heads. You'll be into it under $4000 and with a turbo you should have the power for 10's.

If you have the money upgrade the ignition and ditch that optispark.

Best advice I can give you would be to sell it and buy a decent looking 65 mustang thats already set up pretty well:)
