Ok, honestly, i'm not much into racing, nor that much into cars. I know a little here and a little there. Most of what I know about cars, I have learned from one of my bestest friends/ex-b. But what I want to know is about racing from a womans perspective. Do the guys give you loads of crap? Do you shove it back in their face? Is there some kind of unspoken battle that goes on between the boys and women? How hard is it to be a woman and to race with the boys? Whats your story? How did you get involved in cars? Now, see, I was raised with five brothers, so this whole getting greasy, dirty, grimy thing doesnt bother me, but all I learned about cars with them was how to tell the difference between Dodge and Ford by the front ends and how to tell a mustang from any angle. I want to know more about you women out there, though, that have been into cars longer and know a lot more. When you go into auto stores (before they knew you), did they try to treat you like some ordinary chik out there who doesnt know the difference between carborated engines and fuel injected? Did you show them up and dance around them with your knowledge about cars? I'm just real curious :D

Heck no the guys are great, you just have to be able to lauph at your self too. My husband has been into cars probly since he was born it's like a drug to him. I try to listen when the guys talk about different things to pick up knowledge. Plus they are all very helpful in more ways then you can imagine or maybe you can! LOL Anyway there are some butholes but there will always be so you get use to it. But at the track everyone is pretty cool since were all there for the same reason.....

Well, I don't know too much about cars, but I try to learn. My dad's been building his own cars, and drag racing for about 23 years. I've been at the drag races since I was born. Most of the time, the guys are really helpful. I have one guyfriend that drag races, that I've watched him do alot of different things to his cars. As long as he isn't rushed for time or anything, he's more than happy to show me what he is doing and why he is doing it. As for the racing aspect, sometimes the guys can be assholes, sometimes they get a wee bit butt hurt to get beaten by a girl. But usually it's just racing, and you'll get the same amount of crap as the guys...

Well, when I walk into like Schuck's or Napa I walk in with confidence and when I choose to ask them a question I state it in such a way that I know what I'm talking about. After awhile, some/most of them know who I am so it's no biggie.

At the track I sometimes have had a hard time trying to find someone to race. Not sure if it's because of my car (which is 'average' I believe) or because I'm a girl. One time I did race a guy, beat his ass and then he seemed to be all butt hurt about it. It was funny.

I have guys try to race me on Sprague in the Valley at times. (Stupid thing to do...too many cops) but I beat the little ricer Honda (no offense to anyone) and I also beat an older Corvette.

Before i met my current boyfriend i was not really into cars. i was more of a rodeo chick. But after hanging out with him more and more around all the cars it was really becoming interesting to me. Now ive been dating him for 2 1/2 years so i know my share of stuff on cars. Most of the time guys are realyl impressed by girls knowing stuff about cars, but somtimes they mistake it for showing off. But yeah i love cars now and am starting to work on my own. nothing to hardcore but i really enjoy it. i have a little project car that im workin on now and hopefully when i get more money to play with i can really make it nice and somewhat fast and then be able to say i got my own car to race... So for all the girls out there who area interested in cars go for it. Its fun and quite fun to suprise a guy when you know more about cars then they do. Haha!

Also, EDUCATE yourself. When you know there is a problem with your car, go straight to your Chilton's and read up on it, where the parts are, etc.

I also wouldn't recommend using the word "bestest" as it's not a word. They won't take you seriously as knowing anything about cars if you don't know how to speak.

lol... well i never really have been one to use that word much. But yeah if somethins up with my car i usually just get on the internet and research it for a while...i usually figure it out.

From a guy prospective...

That's whats cool about the hobby. It is gender neutral! My 50 year old Mom has a 10 second 1970 Monte Carlo and my Little sister has a full tube chassis 1971 Chevelle that runs 9.0s and will not hesitate to go .000 on me any day... All it takes is getting under the hood and learning the basics, the rest come with time...

Its true i started out watching my dad do a tranny swap in our 69 f250 then just started doing things like swapping plugs in lawn mowers and moving up to oil changes then minor rebuilds and so on its not like i had an instructor my whole life. the big trick to it all, ask Q's K Dogg

just another guys perspective thing...

...guys flip eachother shit all the time, in the shop at the track on the road whatever. Some guys in general just get butt hurt to lose. I would think if you're getting the same kind of sarcastic shit flipping (within reason, all in fun ya know) just means that you're another one of the guys driving a car.

I think it's great to see women not have some stupid gender barrier hold them from what is fun. My wife could care less really until she met me....now she is really into it and wants more....although of course her dream car is an expensive one (67' GTO).

And the hobby altogether gender set aside...is for fun! I can't tolerate unsportsmanship or rudeness.

I have always thought it was really cool seeing women that race. Our old secretary had lived her life to try to race for a living. Elaine something. I remember asking her how that french manicure went with wrenching...

"Oh, I break them sometimes but it makes fishing nuts out of tight places a breeze."

She raced funny cars. She was worried when she sold her old one (875 horsepower) and had to go to school to learn to drive her new one (2500 horsepower).

Women have a weight advantage (generally :)) because every 100 pounds equals about 0.1 second in the 1/4 mile. Also women learn easier because they aren't letting their pride get in the way, so much.

The coolest thing about the track is that everyone's there for the same thing. The import guys are gearheads. The domestics are gearheads. The bikers are gearheads. 99% of guys like girls that are into the same things they are. And it works the other way too. But knitting probably won't net you many chicks. That might be taking it too far.

That's true...women DO have a weight advantage (USUALLY) except those who choose to call other's names because their English was corrected. Those girls may not have a weight advantage....

ya know, i would think that the girl who would WASTE their time correcting other peoples' grammar/English in a CAR FORUM wouldn't have any weight advantage and make herself look like the certain name she was called...but i might be wrong- guess we'll see, huh.

But you sure are going to finish it, aren't ya. Doesn't matter that it was long long ago and you moved a few states away and no one gives a shit. You are still going to come here and bring it up.

You give women a bad name. Why don't you just leave.

sooo anywho back to the question of women in the racing world. i find it an enjoyable event you get the guys who look down on you until you go out onto the track and show what your made of. then you have the ones who are always willing to give you tips and help you out with your car. My pit crew (family) wasnt there one day and a bunch of different people (men) were helping me unload my car, pull me through the water and give me tips on jetting. the track is realy one big family so long as your willing to lose graciously and always be a good sport. Yes, you do get the "women don't know anything" but alot of the time its old grumpy men who you just have to ask questions about their car to get them to warm up to you..
The Track is definetly a place of neutral gender. Guys honestly seem to want more women to come out and race.
