Thanks Beau! To assemble a shortblock you're looking at, in the neighborhood of, $150-200. At least that's what I charge. All depends on what all needs to be done. Do you need to file fit the rings, install the rings, is everything clean, put the pistons on the rods (full floating), painting the block... everything that takes more time and effort to make sure it's done right.

pretty much I got a dirty, greasy 340 block, with the crank and pistons all taken apart. Everythings dirty and hasnt been put together for probably 5 years, just collecting dust. The pistons have rings, but I dont know what kind of shape they're in.

First off, I'd take the block, crank, rods, pistons and have 'em cleaned. Oneil's Custom Engines can do a real nice job of that. They really stay up on their costic and cleaners. If the rings are used up, I'd take those off before having them cleaned cause you'll be getting new ones anyhow. Once everything is clean and free of any carbon on the pistons (and in the ring lands), you'll be starting out with a lot nicer piece. I'd probably run a quick polish over the crank as well to make sure there isn't any little burs that'll tear up the bearings. Also, you can have a hone run threw the cylinders to get any scraches and dings that might be there. You can keep going on with all the little things but I guess it also depends on what you want to do with the engine.

Not as of yet. With any luck *fingers crossed*, we'll have some news for you for your winter break from school.
