I need help Identifying a Chevy transmission, how do you tell the difference between a 400 and 350 auto transmission? I am trying to help my uncle find/replace the transmission in a 82 Chevy 4x4.

oh and can one replace the other? ie. bolt patterns and length, mounting points.

Thanks for any help.

TH350 has a square pan with one of the rear corners cut at an angle. TH400 is rectanular shaped with the rear coming to a sort of point. They will both bolt to the block but the trans mounts are different. There are also long/short shaft versions of both. Take a pic of what u have and I'll tell you what you have.
